Our project proposal responds to the theme of absence by looking into the lack of technology we possess, for example feeling of sehnsucht, the feeling of longing for a familiar, but non-earthly home. We will be making a story using by the name of "Out of Reach" involving videos, photographs and digital illustrations (some illustrations will be made into .gif files) and coding in glitch. As well as making a website to display of each member’s projects and interpretations of the theme of absence. The story is about a spaceship that is restricted by technological lacking, therefore cannot reach the many unique planets the universe has to offer. The main inspirations were the obelisks from the Serpentine Gallery, as they were vast in size and incited a feeling of being small in comparison. But the Wellkome Exhibit of "In Plain Sight" was the biggest inspiration. There was so much to be seen in the gallery, from mythology with the third eye, to a robe with eyes on it, even to how a program was being used to scramble a person’s face to fool AI. Looking at all of the interpretations of eyes gave inspiration on how absence can be looked at differently. Eventually, the absence of the necessary technology was chosen. We aim to explore the feeling of being just out of reach from something bigger than ourselves, due to us lacking the technology and finances to answer our questions.
